UN delists Al-Nusrah Front from ISIL, al-Qaida sanctions list
The U.N. Security Council committee overseeing sanctions on ISIL and al-Qaida has removed Al-Nusrah Front for the People of the Levant from its sanctions list, ending asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo measures.
UNITED NATIONS, February 27, 2026 — The U.N. Security Council committee responsible for sanctions related to ISIL and al-Qaida has removed one entry from its sanctions list, identifying the delisted entity as Al-Nusrah Front for the People of the Levant. The move was announced in press release SC/16306.
The committee said the action was taken on Feb. 27 under the sanctions regime established by resolutions 1267, 1989 and 2253. As a result, the entity is no longer subject to the sanctions list measures, which had included an asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.
U.N. materials and related regulatory notices identify the delisted entry as Al-Nusrah Front for the People of the Levant, also known as Al-Nusra Front, which had been listed separately until Feb. 27, 2026. A U.N. sanctions summary had described the group as remaining aligned with al-Qaida despite earlier efforts to rebrand.
The delisting updates the ISIL and al-Qaida sanctions list and the broader U.N. consolidated list used by governments and financial institutions for compliance screening.
