BRUSSELS, August 14, 2026 — Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway and Ukraine have aligned themselves with an EU decision renewing sanctions linked to Iran’s military support for Russia and regional armed groups, the Council of the European Union said.

The alignment follows the Council’s July 24 adoption of Decision (CFSP) 2026/1837, which amended the EU sanctions framework established under Decision (CFSP) 2023/1532. The framework covers Iran’s military support for Russia’s war against Ukraine, assistance to armed groups and entities in the Middle East and Red Sea region, and Iranian actions undermining freedom of navigation in the Middle East.

The Council renewed the restrictive measures and removed four individuals from the sanctions list.

The nine countries said they would ensure their national policies conform to the EU decision, extending the practical reach of the bloc’s sanctions policy beyond its member states. The EU welcomed their commitment.

The move reflects continued European coordination on sanctions targeting Iran’s military relationships with Russia and armed actors across the Middle East, including measures intended to restrict support connected to weapons transfers and regional security threats.
