EU Council briefly extends Ukraine territorial integrity sanctions
The European Union has extended sanctions targeting actions undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity until Sept. 22, giving the Council additional time to conduct a comprehensive review of the measures.
BRUSSELS, September 15, 2026 — The Council of the European Union on Tuesday extended restrictive measures imposed under its Ukraine territorial integrity sanctions regime until Sept. 22, 2026, according to a decision published in the EU Official Journal.
Council Decision (CFSP) 2026/2103 amends Decision 2014/145/CFSP, the framework first adopted in March 2014 in response to actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.
The measures had most recently been renewed on March 14 for a further six months. The latest decision provides a short additional extension, which the Council said is intended to give it more time to “comprehensively examine and review” the sanctions framework and ensure an orderly decision-making process.
The Council said the measures should remain in force while Russia’s actions continue to violate fundamental rules of international law, including the prohibition on the use of force under the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law.
The decision replaces the expiry provision in Article 6 of Decision 2014/145/CFSP to state that the sanctions regime will apply until Sept. 22, 2026.
The measure entered into force on Sept. 15, the date of its publication in the Official Journal.
