US designates Nicaraguan prison official under Section 7031(c)
The U.S. Department of State on Tuesday publicly designated Roberto Clemente Guevara Gómez, the maximum-security director of Nicaragua’s La Modelo prison, under Section 7031(c) for involvement in a gross violation of human rights.
The U.S. Department of State said Feb. 18 it is taking action “to promote accountability” by designating Roberto Clemente Guevara Gómez, identified as the maximum-security director of La Modelo prison in Nicaragua.
According to the department, the designation was made under Section 7031(c) for Guevara Gómez’s involvement in “a gross violation of human rights of a political prisoner.”
The department said the public designation is made under Section 7031(c) of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2024 (Div. F, P.L. 118-47), as carried forward by the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2026 (Div. A, P.L. 119-37).
The statement also called for the “immediate, unconditional release of all unjustly detained political prisoners in Nicaragua.”
